Canada bans US goods as Washington blocks Canadian cars and dairy

Canada's dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on C$27.6 billion of U.S. goods took effect at 12:01 a.m. on September 8, 2026 — and later the same day Washington signed proclamations banning Canadian vehicles, dairy and alcohol outright from September 29.

Why it matters: From September 29 most Canadian alcohol, dairy and vehicles cannot legally enter the United States. A tariff is a price you can pay; a ban is an absence you cannot. USMCA origin does not exempt anything.
